What to Expect

Starting therapy is a meaningful step, and it’s completely natural to have questions about what to expect. These first few sessions are a chance for us to get to know each other, clarify your goals, and see if working together feels like the right fit.

Initial Consultation

I provide a free 20 minute phone or telehealth consultation. You can contact me by phone or email to arrange a time for us to speak. This consultation provides both of us with an opportunity to learn more about each other and to better determine if I am the right therapist to meet your needs, During the consultation, I will ask you some questions about yourself and also welcome and encourage you to ask me questions as well. If we agree that I am potentially a good therapist fit for you, we will then discuss the practical matters of fee and finding a convenient time to meet.

What to Expect in the First Few Sessions

1

Individuals generally enter therapy with the want to change and hopefully benefit their lives in some way. Having a good therapeutic fit and being in sync about the goals of therapy is extremely important. These early sessions allow for an opportunity to continue to evaluate if I’m the right person to work with you.

2

Our first few sessions will focus on understanding your particular concerns, both in the present and in the context of your life experiences. I’ll also provide some initial impressions/recommendations of what our work together would look like. If we agree that I’m the right therapist for you, we will then work together to establish a mutually agreed upon plan to address your specific goals.

3

If for any reason within the process we determine that a different expertise, modality of care, or approach would benefit you, I’ll work with you to provide recommendations and referrals. I have a wonderful network of therapists and psychiatrists with whom I frequently collaborate.
